BLTs, Sarkozy Sunday, Pesto Eggs

Dear Bakery Family,

Remember last summer? The cursed summer of the Heritage Tomato Crop Failure? We keened and rent our garments for naught. All we could do was wait a year and hope. Well, it's looking good this year, There should be some (at least a few) tomatoes to begin having BLTs by next week!. And there should be a plentitude soon after.

These are Pat Smith's Kirklin Farms Heritage Tomatoes. She no longer sells any vegetables at the farmers market but has raised enough to sell at the farm and to us. There really are no tomatoes that compare to the taste of these beautiful heritage lovelies. I know, they don’t ship, they get fusarium wilt, they have low yields, often have weird shapes and sizes and need informed and expert handling—all things that have been bred out of modern tomatoes, while unfortunately we didn’t seem to notice that they took the great flavor with them.

Ah, a BLT where the bacon shatters, the lettuce is crisp, the mayonnaise has a tang, the bread is lightly toasted, the tomatoes are perfectly ripe. One which has to be eaten leaning over your plate as the juice runs down your hand. Yes, given that nothing terrible happens, there will be BLTs this year! Yay!!

We are once again open on Sundays from 7:30a-3p. As we get Sundays going, we plan on having special brunch dishes available. This week we will have Fried Eggs on a Pesto/Goat Cheese diamond shaped Croissant. Garnished with, you guessed it, basil leaves (which seem to be missing in this photo). We are still in the experimental stage so they will only be available from 10a - 12a as long as they last. But don’t worry, we will be serving lots of brunch treats as Sunday at Sarkozy evolves. Of course, we will have all of our regular pastries and lunch selections available including pizza as well as all of our breads. Life should always offer us fresh bread every day.

Other News! Beginning this week, we will be supplying Sarkozy Product to the Fresh Thyme grocery store in Portage. We are delivering every day, mid-afternoon. Fresh Thyme is carrying many of our products - bread, cookies, coffee cakes, crackers and more. We know that this will be another convenient outlet for you to get a great selection of Sarkozy products every day of the week. Of course we are still at D&W and Mid-Town Fresh snd PFC (People's Food Co-op), however, we are now delivering to them seven days a week as well.

See you at the Saturday Farmers Market on Bank Street and the Sunday Farmers Market in Portage at City Hall. This is the most glorious time of year for produce and Southwest Michigan has some of the best in the world. Our farmers are struggling with the changes in climate so let’s get out there and support them!

See you there and at the store and everywhere!
