Sunday Shenanigans

Dear Sarkozy People,

So last Sunday we were treated to a demonstration of Okinawan Karate brought to us by Lia and Emma The (“Tay”), two young martial artists who are representing Team USA at the Martial Arts World Championship this weekend! Their father, Henning Schröder and mother, Yu-lien The are Kalamazoo musicians that performed in the “Raising the Dough Benefit Concert” for the bakery after the fire. In an indirect, roundabout kind of way, Sarkozy Bakery is returning the favor by sponsoring Lia and Emma while they compete. Two years ago in London, Lia won two bronze medals and this year, Emma is competing in the youngest age bracket. We’ll keep everyone updated with how they do this weekend.

While we don’t plan on hosting karate demonstrations EVERY Sunday, this is pretty much in the spirit of what we hope Sarkozy Sundays to be. We intend to reinstate the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra collaboration and host various concerts in the Colombia Building Atrium. We also are searching for musicians who would like to perform on any given Sunday. We’ve already been in touch with Living Room Musicians and we’ve got Dave Carambula playing finger-style guitar this Sunday at 10:00 am. Thanks, Dave!

We really want Sundays to stand out as a day for people to congregate in the bakery and share their passions, skills, or interests. We want to be a hub for people in Kalamazoo to learn and appreciate their neighbors. Oh, and to enjoy a pastry while they’re doing it!

Speaking of Kalamazoo community, WMUK recently hosted a Storycorps event where I interviewed David Walker, a baker at Sarkozy as well as the kitchen manager at Ministry for Community. David is a kind and generous person and you’ll get some understanding of how remarkable he is when you listen to his story. Storycorps will be hosting an event at the Kalamazoo Public Library on Thursday, July 27th at 6:00pm - Today! I don’t think David’s piece will be shared, but he’ll be getting a copy and he might let us share it in the next email.

In closing, turns out we’re still a bakery making pastries and bread that you can get every day - Oh! I almost forgot, we’re open on Sundays now! That was kind of the whole purpose of this email. That means you can stop by our bakery on any given day of the week and we’ll have the aforementioned delicious baked goods for you.
